"As individuals, as communities, as nations, we are interdependent and share a collective responsibility to ensure that peoples of all countries, races and religions are guaranteed the full range of human rights that are at the heart of freedom and dignity." ~Elie Weisel

  1. The pictures that we took a look at on Thursday were surprising and horrible. I was surprised to see that Cuba was still very bad as it was when Castro was in power. It was horrible to see that people built there own boats just to escape from what has happened to their country and the horrors it has to offer. I already knew some things about the Rwandan genocide but after taking a look at some of these pictures, I had a different look to it. I was shocked to read that an estimated 800,000 people were killed within 100 days during the Rwandan genocide. I was surprised to see that we actually rescue some Cuban refugees from a boat out in the sea. When I saw the picture of the child curled up like a ball looking like he is crying and in the background I see many dead bodies, I thought how could anyone do such a thing and just go ahead and kill 800,000 people in such a short amount of time. If I was there and experienced the killings, I would never forget nor live with myself remembering what happened in Rwanda. Then when I saw the picture of the child lying on steps and in the background you see many people in rags as clothes. You can just tell that they have nowhere to go.

  2. Learning about the Holocaust is shocking because it is so hard to believe these events actually occurred. However, it is just as shocking to learn about the occurrences in countries such as Darfur, Cuba, and Rwanda, because these atrocities are still going on today. It’s so hard to imagine because the way we live is so different from the way the people in these countries have to live. With all of the technological and industrial advances we have today, it’s unbelievable that almost nothing is being done to help the people in third world countries. People today are so caught up in their own lives, they don’t realize how lucky they are and they don’t think about how they could try to spread that luck toward countries that really need it most. As human beings, we need to stop being indifferent about what is going on in the world, because that makes us part of the problem. Part of the reason so little is done is because it is so hard to imagine and believe that people actually have to live in such a scary and unsafe environment. It is painful to see pictures of innocent children with virtually nothing in their lives. More needs to be done to try to help these countries.

  3. Learning about the Holocaust made me realize that there are many people in other countries that are not as fortunate as we are. Many people are starving all around the world. It is sad to look at all the picture on the LIFE website and imagine how they have to live. Being so fortunate, we cannot imagine how their life actually is. Many people never want to open up and see how people around the world are living. Some people are not able to buy food and water. This is very upsetting because there is a way to help and so many people do not even think about what they can do. They are just thinking about themselves and they do not know how lucky they are for living in a house and having food on the table for them. In some places, such as Darfur, this is happening now. Some of the families cannot even provide themselves with clothes and would have just enough clothes to help them day by day. Many people in third would countries are trying to stay alive and many are dying because they do not have enough nourishment.

  4. During this unit, learning about the Holocaust we were taught about the horrible genocide of the Jewish by the Nazis. Innocent people were recklessly murdered, tortured, beaten and starved when put into concentration and death camps. They were taken from their homes and small children and mothers were instantly killed when brought to these camps. Thinking about this, and about today’s world it's hard to think that innocent people are still being killed and treated awfully. It's shocking to know that in places like Cuba, Rwanda and Darfur such brutality is still happening. To think that in today’s world people are scared for their lives and just trying to stay alive is horrible. It’s sad to know that we aren’t helping these innocent people, most people don’t stop to think about how lucky we are to live in a society that is accepting unlike some other places around the world. People living through the Holocaust would have been so grateful to have others helping them, but there was such a large percentage of bystanders but no one had made a difference. Today, with such modern technology and many organizations there are many people trying to make a difference but it’s not even close to the amount of atrocities occurring around the world. It’s truly shocking to hear the amount of misfortunes happening, and innocent people not getting the help they deserve.

  5. Learning about the Holocaust in the past was just like learning another unit. This year in global and English we went into such depth and details about what happened to these people. I felt so bad for everything they went through and it’s disgusting to even think about the soldiers that did these horrible things to those innocent people. After learning about the Holocaust I thought there is nothing that could be worse done to people but then I learned about what was happening in present day. My whole life I feel so sheltered because I had no idea that genocide was being repeating in Africa, Cuba and other countries all over the world. When I was going through the images I kept think, why are people so cruel and inhumane to others. Were all from the same race and I don’t understand why we can’t all get along or just ignore the parts we don’t like about each other. These pictures really sicken me but also make me feel so lucky to be able to go to school and learn about these things and not have to go through them. I am sure that those kids in the picture don’t have an education or ever had a real home they can come home to every single day. It confuses me why people do this to each other; I don’t get what it does from them or how they can sleep at night knowing what they have done.

  6. In both English and Global class, we’ve learned about such atrocities such as the Holocaust in Europe, and the Rwanda genocide in Africa. Millions of people were killed in short periods of time, based on their beliefs. After looking at the photos, the one that stood out to me the most was the photo of the child crouched on the ground surrounded by dead bodies. I thought it was so sad and awful that so many people had been killed. It shocks me even more that such atrocities are still going on today. For example, in Darfur, there are still so many people being killed, and people just stand by and let it happen. As Elie Weisel had said, it is our responsibility to ensure that all people have human rights; yet, such horrible things continue to happen in our world today. From what had been done to the Jews during the holocaust, you’d think that people would have learned from such a horrible event, that it should never happen again, yet genocides still continue in Africa and other places around the world. It is a very terrible thing to see, and extremely sad.

  7. Well I don't know about any of the atrocities on voice thread, but I know or the Rwandan genocide in Rwanda during the 90's. I can't believe how people can treat another so cruely, and in the case of the the genocide in Rwanda and in the holocaust many people died for no good reason, because Of their race or background. It scares me to think and the crazy people who killed millions didn't feel bad whatsoever for the victims in this situation. I also can't believe how many of the victims didn't stand up for themselves and their people if I was a victim in the holocaust or the Rwandan genocide I would try my hardest to gather up all my people revolt, because I believe I was probably going to die anyways why not die trying to save myself and others.

  9. Throughout this holocaust unit, I am learning about the awareness of other horrible events happening in the world. The holocaust had much damage to many people and it’s hard to think that situations similar to this are still occurring today. Many people know of this, but still chose not to do anything about it. If it does not affect them, then they simply won’t do anything about it. That is not the way to react to these types of situations. Atrocities like the holocaust could have been very different with the help of other countries. Now it is our turn to step up and make a change in places like Darfur. There are many people that need help, and we can do it. America can be the change these other countries need. This Holocaust unit was a real eye opener to all the other atrocities going on today. Personally, I want to make a difference now and help the children of Darfur. I think it is horrible how some of these children are getting treated, I cannot even imagine if I was in their shoes. They are all so brave.

  10. Since the Holocaust has taken place there have been many other atrocities and genocides that have taken place in our world. The idea of a genocide shows that the nature of man is evil. It is heartbreaking to look at pictures of children that are abused and affected by these savage people that could commit such atrocities. The pictures from Thursday’s class really affected the way I look at genocide and atrocities such as the Holocaust. It is terrible to think that as we write these we aren’t doing anything to help the genocides and the world problems. During the Holocaust the percentage of bystanders was 85 percent. That number is shocking to think about. If only some of these bystanders would have helped with the Holocaust then maybe it wouldn’t have had the same affects that it did. Not only did this happen during the holocaust but it is happening now as we watch the genocide in Darfur now. People in our world today are so worried about themselves while others are suffering and don’t even have places to sleep at night. Innocent people are being murdered everyday and we are so caught up in our own lives.

  11. one of the most prevalent atrocities in the news today, is muammar ghadafi's dreaded physical appearance. as a world leader, i think it is an atrocity for him to present himself in such a way. he is the visual representation of what i would assume carlos santana would look like if he was indeed, a muppet.

  12. These atrocities we have leanred about are awful, from the rawandan genocide to the holocaust. Each one of the genocides were due to the hate of another culture of people. One of the most amazing things is that it seems the the rest of the world is able to just stand by and let this happen with little means for rescue or help. Even more astounding is the genocide is able to repeat itself over and over again.****

  13. Learning about these terrible atrocities that are still happening today is a very humbling experience. After learning about the Holocaust in both Global and English, I found myself thinking that it was in the past and these atrocities couldn’t occur in this day and age; but soon I realized how naive I was to all the other atrocities that do occur everyday all around the world. Knowing that these very inhumane occurrences are still happening makes me feel sorry for those who are going through that, and lucky that I live the life I do. I could never imagine living in a world where I am denied my rights, struggle to have a simple meal, or worry about where I would sleep for the night. I am glad we are learning about these atrocities to keep me humble and grateful.

  14. Before this year I thought I had a good understanding of what the holocaust was. I was extremely wrong. Throughout this year in Global and English I learned what the holocaust really was. I realized how terrible it was and the dreadful things people experienced. I could not imagine being a Jewish person and being around at this time. Experiencing death around you I feel is probably the worst thing one can experience. The Jewish people of this time experienced death all around them. They saw people like family and friends be murdered by German soldiers who did not care at all. The Jewish people of this time were tortured and it’s so hard for me to believe these atrocities actually occurred. It’s tough to believe a human being could do such things to another human being. Learning about this topic further more made me believe man is innately evil. What I’ve learned from Elie Wissel is people would throw food at Jews back during the holocaust just to watch each other kill one another for it. For someone to get enjoyment from watching that is simply unmoral and horrible.

  16. Learning about the Holocaust and other genocides was an interesting experience. I learned about all the dreadful things people went through and how low humanity can really be. We learn and hear about how horrible the Holocaust was but we don't really understand the full meaning of it because we haven't gone through it ourselves, we will never really understand how survivors really feel. It's really hard to believe how low humanity can really be, german soldiers just lined jewish people up and brutally murder all of them and to just stand there and watch while people died. I can't even imagine how i would feel if I was in the Holocaust, how frightened I would be knowing that I could die any day. It makes me think how grateful I am to be alive and not to take things for granted.

  17. Both during and after the Holocaust unit, I came to a complete understanding of how horrific the Holocaust truly was. The situations in which the Jews had to face were completely morbid and unethical. The German Nazis had exterminated the Jewish population for no apparent reason. They were starved, beaten, separated from loved ones, worked long vigorous hours and massacred. I have absolutely no idea how someone could find enjoyment in watching these sort of acts, I get sick just reading and learning about it. The Holocaust will forever be one of the most horrific atrocities throughout history
